* Elementary Arabic 1
The goal of this course is to enable comprehensive
learning of Arabic, allowing students to gain basic
knowledge on pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence
structures required to systematically learn Arabic
and to practice so that they can actively use the
material they have learned. To this end, students
acquire basic knowledge on Arabic pronunciation and
grammar, develop the ability to read and understand
basic sentences and writings, and also develop the
ability to express themselves in short writing samples.
* Elementary Arabic Conversation 1
Students build the basis for Arabic communication skills
by mainly practicing expressions that are useful in
daily Arabic conversations.
* Analysis of Arabic Sentences or Arabic Grammar
1 (1), (2)
By giving analytic explanations on grammar that are
needed to understand elementary Arabic, students are
guided to identify and experience the characteristics
of Arabic. In particular, students¡¯ level of understanding
will be strengthened by emphasizing the general characteristics
of Arabic grammar, thereby developing their ability
to analyze and understand sentences.
* Arabic Listening and Pronunciation 1, 2
Students are trained mainly on basic Arabic expressions
and sentence structures to learn accurate pronunciation
and intonation of Arabic and effectively listen to
Arabic. Through this process, students build a strong
foundation for efficient Arabic learning in the advanced
stage.
* Intermediate Arabic (1), (2)
As an intermediate course in Arabic education, this
course enables students to become proficient in Arabic
grammar and expressions, which they have learned in
the elementary course, and to further deepen their
understanding of Arabic grammar and sentences. Students
develop Arabic communication skills mainly by learning
grammar rules and textual exposition that are appropriate
for an intermediate course.
* Intermediate Arabic Conversation (1), (2)
This course improves practical conversation skills
by having students engage in dialogue with an Arabic
professor and learn practical Arabic.
* Arabic Sentences Analysis 2 (1), (2)
Students study the structure and meaning of Arabic
sentences and develop the ability to use Arabic.
* Arabic Listening Comprehension (1), (2)
Students develop skills in using Arabic by being trained
in listening and understanding Arabic that is read
by a person whose mother tongue is Arabic.
* Introduction to Arabic Interpretation & Translation
(1), (2)
Students study the basis for Arabic interpretation
and translation.
* Advanced Arabic Conversation (1), (2)
By advancing and developing Arabic conversation skills,
this course enables students to acquire advanced Arabic
communication skills that can be actually used in daily
life.
* Business Arabic (1), (2)
This course enhances the understanding of and the ability
to use business Arabic. The main objective is to have
students become accustomed to trade practicality by
learning various subjects, such as trade documents,
trade conversation, bidding customs, and advertisements.
* Current Arabic
Through study of newspapers of Arabic countries, students
learn regional conditions that are related to daily
life, such as politics, culture, and the economy. Lectures
are given on the subject of Arabic that is used in
modern Arabic newspapers.
* Ancient Arabic Literature
Ancient literature takes up a large part of Arabic
novels, essays, and plays. The very essence of Arabic
literature is learned through ancient Arabic literature.
* Arabic Essay
This course presents an overall and theoretical outline
on Arabic essays. Students also choose, research, and
analyze leading works.
* Arabic Syntax
As part of syntactic research on Arabic, this course
creates rules involved with creating Arabic sentence
structures into models, and compares the syntactic
characteristics of Arabic sentences with those of other
foreign languages. It thus identifies the universal
characteristics and mediating variables of Arabic.
* Arabic Phonology
Based on the vowels, consonants, and points and manners
of articulation, students conduct comparative analyses
between Arabic's unique phonological structure and
general phonology.
* History of Arabic Linguistics
This course entails conducting historical research
on the development of Arabic, from before Islam to
the 21st century.
* Arabic Drama
By researching and analyzing key works, among contemporary
Arabic dramas, students better understand the value
of the works and relevant theories.
* History of Islamic Thought
This course involves historical contemplations and
research on the origin, fundamental principles, as
well as the transitional and development process of
Islamic thoughts, such as Islamic laws, politics, economy,
theology, and philosophies.
* History of Islam
This course takes a historical look at the spread and
development of Islam in Arabic areas and non-Arabic
areas after the advent of Islam.
* Diplomatic History of the Middle East
Students review the foreign policies of Arabic nations
by era and identify the flow and characteristics of
their establishment process. Through this process,
students gain an understanding of the prospective and
political importance of the Arab world.
* FLEX Arabic
This course enhances the four Arabic-related skills
in preparation for the FLEX exam. It covers reading/listening
of FLEX as well as speaking/writing,
allowing students to comprehensively prepare for FLEX
questions. The ultimate goal is for the students to
develop the four skills related to Arabic through practice
on exam questions.
* Advanced Arabic Grammar
Students organize Arabic grammar that they have learned
according to the Arabic grammar structure. In addition,
focus is placed on accurate use of Arabic by expanding
the scope of understanding and analytic skills with
regards to Arabic sentence structures.
* Arabic Short Stories
This course has students familiarize themselves with
more effective learning by enabling them to fully use
the Arabic language and enhance their linguistic sense
through Arabic short stories.
* Arabic Correspondence
By researching the styles of correspondences used in
the Arabic political and economic sectors, students
learn official Arabic sentence patterns and commonly
used expressions.
* Arabic Novels
This course involves categorizing and researching full-length
novels and short stories of ancient to modern Arab
into different genres and trends of thoughts.
* Practice in Arabic Translation
Lectures encompass general sentence structures and
grammar required for Arabic translation. Students engage
in various training to ensure correct translation and
use of correct Arabic expressions.
* Understanding of Arabic Linguistics
Students will engage in overall Arabic linguistics
research by studying Arabic phonology, phonetics, syntax,
derivation, and semantics.
* History of Arab
This course involves historical research on the transitional
process of Arab from ancient to modern times as well
as important historical incidents.
* Studies of Arabic Politics £¦ Society
Students expand their understanding of the Arabic region
by engaging in comparative analyses on the political
and social systems of Arabic nations, based on historical
and experiential approaches.
* Seminar on Arabic Politics
Students study the political tendencies and characteristics
of Arab from a modern and contemporary historical perspective
through debates and seminars.
* Studies of Hadith
This course promotes students¡¯ understanding of Islam
by researching the religious responsibilities and actions
of the Muslim as well as Islamic doctrines incorporated
in the memoirs of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet.
* Middle East Culture and Media
People are becoming more aware of Middle Eastern media,
such as Aljazeera, mainly due to the spread of Islamic
extremism. Middle Eastern media is also undergoing
the process of globalization, experiencing conflicts
or compromises with the West. This course takes a look
at interactions among the media, politics, and culture
that take place in the Middle East. It covers theoretical
approaches and phenomena. Classes are based on printouts
and audio-video materials. It is an essential course
for students who are interested in the Middle East,
the media, and globalization.
* Studies of Semitic Language
Students conduct comparative research on the different
and common elements between Arabic and Semitic languages
in terms of history and structure.
* History of Arabic Literature
This course takes a historical look at Arabic literature.
It covers the process of the development of ancient
and medieval Arabic literature and enables students
to research the genres and characteristics of Arabic
literature of different eras.
* Seminar on Arab
Students research, analyze, and discuss various matters
related to modern Arab in general in order to promote
a comprehensive understanding of Arab and enable the
making of sound judgments as area study experts.
* Comparative Studies on Written & Colloquial
Arabic
By comparing the literary style and colloquial style
of Arabic, students compare and review language used
in newspapers and official terminologies with language
used in daily life.
* Theory of Arabic Writers
Students analyze the works of leading writers of Arab
literature, through which they research the characteristics
and the philosophy of the works.
* Studies of Arabic Regional
This course aims to encourage students to engage in
in-depth, professional research and analysis of regional
conditions that allow them to approach research in
various fields, such as politics, the economy, society,
and culture, based on a comprehensive understanding
of the Arab world in general.
* Arabic Contemporary Literature
Students gain an understanding of the mindset of the
Arabian people as shown in key genres of contemporary
Arabic literature, such as novels, poems, and plays
and gain a more detailed linguistic sense.
* History of Islamic Culture
Students gain knowledge on the religious aspects of
Islam as well as the Islamic culture in general by
conducting overall research on Islamic politics, religion,
laws, religious sects, and theology.
* Economics of the Middle East
This course helps students understand various issues
related to the economy of the Middle East by having
them engage in research on the Middle Eastern economy
in general.
* History of Arabic Culture
Students develop basic skills needed as Arabic study
majors by looking at Arabic history, religion, thoughts,
social systems, and daily customs, from a cultural
perspective.
* Understanding of Arabic Literature This course analyzes Arabic literary works
and looks at each work¡¯s characteristics, genre,
and story structure from a critical perspective.
* Comparative Studies of Arab Politics
After discussions on key comparative analysis methodologies,
students engage in comparative analyses of the political
and economic structures of Middle Eastern countries
and identify the relationship between a nation and
its politics.
* Arabic Society & Language
Students research the various influences colloquial
Arabic has on the Arabic society through diglossia,
a linguistic characteristic of the Arabic society.
* Arabic Poetry
This course enhances students¡¯ understanding of the
thoughts of Arabic people by accurately identifying,
in detail, the senses, emotions, and consciousness
of the Arabic people, through poetry, which makes up
a substantial portion of its literature.
* Studies of Colloquial Arabic
Students assess and analyze the characteristics of
colloquial Arabic that is spoken across the Arabic
region, including Egypt, Arabian Peninsula, areas surrounding
Iraq, and Maghreb, after which they carry out comparative
research on the differences in pronunciation and grammar.
* Foreign Policy of Arab
This course has students analyze the background and
content of the foreign policies of key Arab countries
as well as the policy-making process. The intent is
to enable students to understand international relations
of the Arab world.
* Studies of the Holy Koran
Students will research the contents of key writings
and lessons of the Koran through Tafsir, thereby gaining
an accurate understanding of religious doctrines and
thoughts of Islam.
