H.U.F.S. has stepped into its second half-century. Inaugurated in 1954 with a founding spirit of advancement and globalization through foreign language education, H.U.F.S. has developed into a Mecca of foreign language education. At the time of its establishment, only five departments, English, French, German, Chinese, and Russian, comprised the foreign language programs. H.U.F.S. has since grown into a major university with 18,000 students on two campuses in Seoul and Yongin.

H.U.F.S.’s “+a” educational program is designed to produce top-level leaders of the future through the effective linking of foreign-language education with specialized areas of international studies including diplomacy, law, economics, political science, trade and education. The "+a" educational system is a resourceful educational system that produces effective international leaders who thrive at the forefront of society. Only H.U.F.S. has such a system because it has established its own unique tradition of foreign language education and foreign studies. To continue this “+a” educational system, H.U.F.S. is committed to the ongoing development of its educational and research programs so that all its students attain skills in English, other foreign languages, and in their particular field of study - in the humanities/social sciences, natural sciences or engineering. Taking advantage of 50 years’ experience, HUFS is now poised to become a creator and a challenger with a mission of hope for a better future for the world in the next half-century.

The people of HUFS strive to reach lofty, challenging and meaningful goals. Already, we have demonstrated the creative and challenging spirit of the people of H.U.F.S. by conquering Mt. Yalung Kang in the Himalayas. The fruit of H.U.F.S. education is "global professionals" imbued with this same spirit of challenge and pioneering.

H.U.F.S. has taken its first steps toward becoming the world's best university. With the opening of the Korea's first-ever English College and 14 language departments including the Department of Central Asian Languages and Greek/Balkan, H.U.F.S. has further expanded its competence in foreign languages and foreign studies. H.U.F.S. is confidently moving forward to become one of the world's most prestigious schools. “Unique & the Best!” H.U.F.S. has a dream to grow into a "focal" university of international exchange, leading globalization efforts in various specialized fields.

In another 50 years, H.U.F.S. will be a harbor through which the pioneers of the world with creative, challenging spirits routinely come and go. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, HUFS announced its plan for its 100th anniversary – to be the best university in the world. The record of the university, its recognition by the government as the top university in the categories of globalization and language, and its opening of Asia's first and finest Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation speak to the accomplishments of H.U.F.S.

H.U.F.S. will never be content to only re-live its past results: it will strive to continuously improve the educational infrastructure and human resources needed to further develop the school. In 2054, on its 100th anniversary, H.U.F.S. will be proclaimed "the world's most prestigious university." H.U.F.S. awaits young, creative minds to sail towards a brighter future together.
